State of Nature - Overall Concern Level

For each site, a State of Nature Score is calculated based on five Aspects of Nature. For this, the Concern Levels are treated numerically (VL= 1, L=2, M=3, H=4, VH=5) and summed across the five Aspects of Nature (Land degradation, Water Scarcity, Water Pollution, Biodiversity Importance, Biodiversity Intactness).

The State of Nature Score is then scaled to a 0-10 range using the following formula:

The Overall State of Nature Concern Level is determined from the State of Nature Score, using the following thresholds:

• Score 0 - 4 = Very Low
• Score 4 - 5 = Low
• Score 5 - 7 = Moderate
• Score 7 - 8 = High
• Score 8 - 10 = Very High

The threshold values are set with wider intervals for lower scores and narrower intervals for higher scores to account for the high sensitivity of underlying nature indicators - as few sites exhibit low concern levels across the different Aspects of Nature. This approach enables effective prioritization, helping to identify the most and least concerning sites within your portfolio.

Example

A site with the following Concern Levels across the five Aspects of Nature…

• Land degradation = Moderate (=3)
• Water Scarcity = Moderate (=3)
• Water Pollution = Very High (=5)
• Biodiversity Importance = High (=4)
• Biodiversity Intactness = Moderate (=3)

… results in an State of Nature Score of 6.5 based on the calculation:

… which in turn is translated to a Overall State of Nature Concern Level of Moderate, since the score of 6.5 falls within the 5 - 7 range.
